Case studies

  • Who: Transformative AI is a medical software company operating in the UK, the US and Estonia. Their predictive patient monitoring software identifies patients at an imminent risk of life-threatening medical events which enables preventive care. Its first patented technology predicts in-hospital sudden cardiac arrest. 

    Development Requirements: Transformative AI approached the CVDHub seeking to obtain patient monitoring data from Barts Health NHS Trust in order to improve and test their technology.

    The CVDHub’s Role: Together, we planned an observational study to collect this data to refine and test their technology and obtained an Innovate UK Biomedical Catalyst grant to fund this work.

    Transformative AI

  • Who: Invitron have developed a highly sensitive and compact point of care diagnostic device designed to reduce the time taken for doctors to access urgent patient test results and make clinical decisions. 

    Development Requirements: Invitron approached the CVDHub because they were seeking to develop a highly sensitive test that could diagnose heart failure at a GP surgery. They were particularly interested in understanding how their product could be integrated into NHS clinical care pathways and processes.

    The CVDHub’s Role: We helped Invitron define their clinical use case and supported them in multiple successful applications to the SBRI healthcare grant funding competition. In total, the CVDHub assisted Invitron in securing approximately £750,000 in development funding.

    Invitron

  • Who: BIOS Health is a leading neural engineering startup based in Cambridge, UK and Montreal, Canada. Their goal is to unlock the potential of the nervous system in treating chronic disease by using AI-powered neural interfaces that can automatically read and write neural signals.

    Development Requirements: BIOS approached the CVDHub because they wanted to better understand physiological and pathological parameters in chronic cardiac diseases. They aimed to develop new outcome metrics for cardiac diseases within their remote health platform.

    The CVDHub’s Role: Together, we planned a clinical study aiming to improve the monitoring of patients discharged following heart attacks using their application installed on smartwatches. We submitted bids for Innovate UK and NIHR funding and hope to collaborate on further studies, aiming to improve patient outcomes and reduce healthcare costs.

    BIOS Health

  • Who: Inavya Ventures is a London-based digital health company specialising in AI who have created AVATR – a remote monitoring platform for patients which provides a dashboard for clinicians and can connect to other medical devices. Inavya Ventures have ongoing collaborations in the UK, Brazil, Germany, Singapore and Sierra Leone.

    Development Requirements: Inavya Ventures approached the CVDHub looking for help in identifying where and how their AVATR product could be applied within a clinical setting.

    The CVDHub’s Role: After introducing Inavya Ventures to relevant clinicians and a public and patient engagement group, we explored whether a prevalent cardiovascular disease could be targeted by the AVATR system and how a study could investigate this. A successful grant submission to Queen Mary University of London secured £50,000 for Project AiCRE (AI-enabled Cardiac Rehabilitation of Ethnic groups) – the creation of a bespoke app to aid the cardiac rehabilitation of ethnic minorities in East London.
